Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a growth factor that is encoded by the human BDNF gene. It belongs to the neurotrophin family and is structurally similar to the nerve growth factor (NGF).

BDNF mainly acts on neurons expressing tyrosine kinase B (TrkB) in the central and peripheral nervous system. It helps in maintaining the survival of existing neurons, and also promotes the growth and differentiation of new neurons and synapses.

BDNF is also essential for long-term memory and regulates glucose and energy metabolism, preventing the exhaustion of β cells. Neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, and Huntington's disease are associated with decreased levels of BDNF. Recombinant BDNF, BDNF gene therapy or BDNG agonists may be useful in the prevention and treatment of these diseases.
