It has been discovered that type III collagen provides a major structural component of hollow organs such as large blood vessels, the uterus, and the intestines. Along with type I collagen, it is also present in many other tissues, but type III collagen is less abundant than type I collagen. In addition, type III collagen is the major collagen in the early stages of both wound healing and the formation of granulation tissue, and carries out important roles in platelet aggregation, wound healing, and skin aging.
Collectively, type III collagens (Col III) are proteins or homotrimers consisting of three homogeneous peptide chains (monomers), each of which is referred to as an α1(III) chain. α1(III) chains have the typical glycine-X-Y repeat sequence of fibrillar collagens.

Col III as Other Tissue Substitutes
RHCIII-EDC (EB-301) is a biosynthetic keratin composed of recombinant full-length triple helical human Col III. EB-301 is used to treat visual impairment related to corneal blindness caused by stable, non-infectious stromal lesions, and is suitable for anterior lamellar keratoplasty (ALK), where it can be used as a replacement for cadaveric human donor corneas. EB-301 was discovered by FibroGen and licensed to Eluminex Biosciences and is currently in Phase III trials for corneal blindness.
