Type II Collagen (Col II)

Type II collagen (Col II) provides the basis for hyaline cartilage, comprising the articular cartilage on the joint surfaces. It accounts for 50% of all protein in cartilage and 85–90% of collagen in articular cartilage and its stability and strength display tissue integrity and resilience to stress. Col II is composed of a homotrimer of three alpha 1 chains derived from type II collagen.

Sources of Type II Collagen (Col II)

Tissues from terrestrial and marine species have been utilized for many years to acquire type II collagen, albeit with varying degrees of purity and efficiency. Recombinant collagen technology has been developed for biomedical applications, taking into account religious beliefs and the potential for interspecies disease transmission. Both yeast and mammalian cell systems have been used for the expression of procollagen type II.

Applications of Type II Collagen (Col II)

Many studies have demonstrated the benefits provided by Col II in cartilage engineering. It has been shown that hydrogels and sponges (the main configuration of scaffolds) composed of extracted native or recombinant forms of Col II can maintain and elicit cartilage phenotypes in vitro.
