Interferon-γ (IFN-γ)

Interferons (INFs) are cytokines secreted at the beginning of viral infection that have both antiviral and antiproliferative effects. As a class of human INFs, human recombinant interferon gamma (IFN-γ) has been approved to treat chronic granulomatous disease and osteoporosis and is increasingly likely to be used as a cancer immunotherapy.

As they do not require posttranslational manipulations to display biological activity, the recombinant INFs currently produced in Escherichia coli (E. coli) is in clinical practice.

Application of Interferon-γ (IFN-γ)

Being an interferon gamma, Actimmune (Interferon gamma-1b) is a single-chain polypeptide with 140 amino acids, which is produced by fermentation in genetically engineered E. coli bacterium that contains recombinant protein-coding DNA. The product is purified by conventional column chromatography and developed by Horizon Pharma.
