Cas9 mRNA expresses the Streptococcus pyogenes Cas9 protein (CRISPR Associated Protein 9), also known as SpCas9 or SpyCas9.
Cas9 is a component of the genome editing system CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats). In the CRISPR system, the Cas9 protein is used to perform double stranded DNA cleavage.
