Cas9 circular RNA (circRNA) expresses the Streptococcus pyogenes Cas9 protein (CRISPR Associated Protein 9), also known as SpCas9 or SpyCas9. The genome editing mechanism known as CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) includes the Cas9 gene. In the CRISPR system, the Cas9 protein is used to perform double stranded DNA cleavage.
